Working from Home? Here’s How to Get the Most out of Your Internet

Get the Most out of Your Internet

The UK has found
itself in unprecedented waters with millions of people across the country working from home and it’s not just the NHS that is feeling the strain during the coronavirus pandemic.

Ofcom, the UKs communications regulator, has issued a warning, along with basic advice in a bid to improve internet speeds for those who are working remotely and relying on streaming services such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

The amount of people now relying on fast internet more than ever before has undoubtably put pressure on broadband providers. So much so that BTs Openreach reports a 20% surge in internet use alone, while streaming platforms like Facebook Netflix, Disney+ and YouTube have already reportedly reduced the quality of videos in an effort to ease the strain.

So, to help you make the most of your internet connection, we’ve rounded up 10 simple tips and tricks to use whilst you work from home.

  1. It may seem obvious, but download films in advance rather than streaming them when someone else maybe trying to make a video call.

  2. Microwave ovens can also reduce wi-fi signals, so avoid using them when you’re making video calls or doing something important online.

  3. Certain devices can interfere with router signals, slowing your internet speed, such as cordless phones, baby monitors, halogen lamps, dimmer switches, stereos and computer speakers, TVs and monitors.

  4. Position your internet router as far as possible from other devices that may interfere with the signal – try putting it on a shelf rather than the floor.

  5. Another obvious one, but keep your router switched on!

  6. If you’re carrying out a lot of Skype or Zoom calls turn off the video and use audio instead as this will require much less of your internet connection.

  7. Try scheduling calls at less common times, rather than on the hour or half hour so you avoid peak internet traffic.

  8. For the best speed, use an ethernet cable to connect your computer directly to your router rather than using Wi-Fi.

  9. If you have one, try to use your landline to make calls as there is also increased pressure on mobile networks.

  10. Don’t use it. Disconnect it! Devices like tablets and smartphones often work in the background, so try switching off wi-fi reception on these when you’re not using them.

There is no doubt that for now, the way we work has changed. In many ways we are proving to be more connected than ever; taking extra time to pick up the phone to clients, check in on colleagues and spend time with family.  Do you have any tips for working from home? Let us know!
